Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was captured by the Trump administration on Jan. 3, is currently being held in a Brooklyn jail where some of the world's best known defendants have been held.

Maduro was detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center ahead of his appearance in Manhattan federal court on Monday, Jan. 5. The Brooklyn jail was once home toJeffrey Epstein'sassociateGhislaine Maxwelland embattled music mogulSean "Diddy" Combs, who is now incarcerated at Fort Dix in New Jersey.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are set toappear before a Manhattan federaljudge at noon local time for arraignment on a four-count indictment that alleges they were at the center of a 25-year international narco-terrorism conspiracy.

President Donald Trumptold reporters on Air Force One that the case against Maduro is "infallible." Maduro has long denied having any involvement in drug trafficking.

Luigi Mangione, accused in the fatal December 2024 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is currently housed at MDC awaiting trial. He has pleaded not guilty. Convicted fraudster and FTX founderSam Bankman-Friedwas also once housed in the facility but has since been moved to Terminal Island in Los Angeles.

Other former detainees include rappers6ix9ineandFetty Wapas well as "pharma bro"Martin Shkreli, who was convicted in 2017 of securities fraud. Shkreli had his bail revoked and was sent to the Brooklyn facility afterhe allegedly made a threat to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

MDC Brooklyn has faced claims of unsafe living conditions, complaints by Ghislaine Maxwell

The MDC Brooklyn currently holds roughly 1,300 men and women and is the only jail occupied by detainees awaiting federal trials in New York City. The jail has long faced criticism from inmates and their attorneys about unsafe and unsanitary living conditions.

MDC Brooklyn detainees said they were left in frigid cells in 2019 after an electrical fire cut the power and heat to the jail in the middle of winter. Two men were killed in 2024 by other inmates wielding makeshift weapons, according to the Justice Department. Their deaths prompted a clampdown on violence within the facility.

She's inmate No. 02879-509 in Florida. But once again, Ghislaine Maxwell is holding court

Before she was convicted in a sex trafficking conspiracy, helping Epstein, a convicted sex offender, entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, Maxwell also complained about overzealous guards, of raw sewage and vermin feces in her cell at the Brooklyn facility.

Maxwell, who was vocal about her holding situation, also said guards kept her away from other prisoners, watched her around the clock, forced her to undergo numerous body scans and conducted multiple searches of her cell each day.
